Explaining the News: Mayor Daley's Announcement that He Won't Run for Re-Election

From The Chicago Tribune:
"For 21 years, that's what I've tried to do," he said. "But today, I am announcing that I will not seek a 7th term as mayor of the city of Chicago.

"Simply put, it's time," said Daley, 68. "Time for me, it's time for Chicago to move on."
What can this mean? Daley has been in office since the late 80s and has shown no interest in giving up his unfettered power in the past. So what gives?

This statement of Daley's is easily explained, if one looks under the surface. The media and every talking head will drone on about how Daley is surrendering the mayor's office and will speculate as to why he would do such a thing--Blago fallout? Obama something, something? Sex scandal? Disease? Making room for Zombie Daddy? Running for higher office? Jeri Ryan? Rahm Emanuel death threats?

But what did Daley actually say? He said he wouldn't seek another term as mayor. In other words, he won't run for office again. He'll simply declare himself God Mayor of Chicago for life and make the position even more hereditary than it already is.

Hope this clears up any confusion.

And Now for a Preview Completely Different. . . .

It's. . .a trailer for Time Bandits. It's topical because Gilliam is looking at releasing a 3-D version (via io9).

Lab Whore Day Was Yesterday?

OH, THE URKOBOLD IS SO HUNGOVER. WHO KNEW THAT TEQUILA AND HEMLOCK WERE SUCH A DEADLY COMBINATION?

THIS POSTING WILL BE BRIEF, AS THE URKOBOLD'S DICTATION WENCH IS BEING FORCED TO READ THE URKOBOLD'S LIPS AS HE SOUNDLESSLY GASPS OUT THESE WORDS. YET HE WOULD BE REMISS IN NOT APPRECIATING THE LAB WHORES WHO SO THOROUGHLY APPRECIATED THE URKOBOLD THESE PAST THREE DAYS.

HAPPY LAB WHORE DAY!
REMEMBER, LAB WHORES DO IT FOR SCIENCE!

New Review of the Stupid New Star Trek Movie

From our favorite reviewer at Red Letter Media. I understand that he doesn't hate this movie as much as he should, but I'm sure he has plenty of interesting insights, as always:

***Update***

So I finally watched the review. Very good, as always, but what struck me as odd was that io9 and others characterize him as liking the movie. I'd say that's superficially true, but since he spent most of the time talking about how, in essence, the movie was simply an action movie called Star Trek--with a few Trekkish things thrown in for flavor--it's hard to really believe that he was anything other than annoyed that Hollywood greed traded off of an established brand to sell something else. Of course, in these days of sequels, reboots, making movies derived from billboards, it's par for the course.

V is for What the Vuck?

***Update***

Commenter entreaties to post French videos aside (we're a purely Germanic site, after all), I suppose the Hamlet trailer from The Last Action Hero is in order. In English, though. Not in French.
